Preserving Legacy and Ensuring Continuity Across Generations

A Flawless Course Across Generations

Architecture Designed to Endure

As family wealth grows, the challenge extends beyond managing individual assets. Attention shifts towards continuity of ownership, succession of control, alignment between family members and preparedness for significant life, business and regulatory events.

Catamaran Family Office supports UK and internationally connected high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth families, principals and established family offices in designing, reviewing and strengthening their long-term wealth architecture. We may act as a central coordination point, an independent adviser or a project partner working alongside the client’s existing professional team.

Our role is not to promise absolute protection. It is to identify and reduce structural vulnerabilities, clarify authority and establish practical arrangements capable of remaining effective as generations, jurisdictions and circumstances change.

Succession of Ownership and Control

We approach succession as the transfer of several interconnected elements: legal ownership, economic benefit, decision-making authority, access to information and responsibility within the family.

Our work may include reviewing the family, ownership and asset landscape; modelling succession and inheritance scenarios; defining how heirs may participate in ownership and decision-making; supporting the gradual transfer of responsibilities during the founder’s lifetime; planning for death, incapacity and other significant events; and coordinating wills, trusts, shareholder arrangements, lasting powers of attorney and related instruments where appropriate.

Legal and tax documents are prepared and validated by suitably qualified advisers in the relevant jurisdictions. Our responsibility is to preserve the coherence of the overall architecture and ensure that its individual elements work together.

Ownership Architecture

We assess whether the family’s existing ownership arrangements remain aligned with its objectives, asset profile, geographical footprint and intended allocation of ownership, benefit and control. Where appropriate, we develop a target structure and coordinate its implementation.
Each arrangement is considered in the context of applicable law, tax and reporting obligations, economic substance, administrative cost, banking requirements and its ability to remain effective as circumstances change.

For UK-connected families, this may include consideration of residence, domicile or long-term residence status, inheritance tax exposure, trust and company reporting, beneficial ownership requirements and the interaction between UK and overseas structures. Advice on these matters is provided by appropriately qualified professionals.

The objective is not to introduce unnecessary complexity, but to reduce unjustified dependencies, inconsistencies and the risk of fragmented ownership or decision-making.

Confidentiality and Information Governance

We establish information-governance arrangements based on need-to-know access, clear segregation of responsibilities and continuity for critical processes.

This may include a map of information flows; an access and authority matrix; a secure document repository; protocols for handling sensitive information; emergency-access and business-continuity procedures; and clear ownership of document maintenance and reporting obligations.

Confidentiality is maintained subject to applicable law and does not override mandatory disclosure obligations to HMRC, regulators, courts, financial institutions or other authorised bodies.

UK and International Coordination

Families with cross-border interests often have assets, structures, tax obligations, decision-making powers and professional advisers spread across several jurisdictions.

We create a consolidated view of these arrangements, reconcile advice received in different countries, identify gaps or inconsistencies and coordinate the alignment of documents and implementation steps.

Legal, tax, fiduciary, investment and, where relevant, Sharia advice is provided by appropriately qualified specialists. Our role is to define the mandate, integrate their conclusions and oversee implementation of the agreed framework.

Investment Governance

We help families formalise the principles governing the management of family capital. These may include investment objectives and acceptable levels of risk, liquidity requirements, concentration limits, decision-making and approval procedures, investment committee responsibilities, delegated authorities, the appointment and oversight of investment managers, performance and risk reporting standards, and procedures for managing conflicts of interest.

The resulting framework is intended to support consistent and accountable decisions while preserving sufficient flexibility to respond to changing circumstances and opportunities.

Independent Review and Stress Testing

We conduct periodic reviews of the family’s ownership, governance and operational arrangements. These reviews may assess whether key documents remain current and consistent, how ownership and control would pass in different circumstances, the family’s dependence on individual members, executives or service providers, the accessibility and security of critical information, the effectiveness of delegated authorities, and preparedness for foreseeable and unexpected events.

Scenario analysis may consider a change in tax residence, disagreement within the family, death or incapacity of a principal, the departure of a key executive or adviser, a significant transaction, regulatory change or a material shift in the family’s asset base.

The family receives a structured assessment of vulnerabilities, prioritised actions and a practical implementation plan.

Family Governance

We help families formalise the relationship between ownership, family members and professional management.

Depending on the family’s requirements, the framework may include a family council and supporting committees, an authority and approval matrix, voting and reserved-matters provisions, principles governing the involvement of spouses and future generations, policies for family employment and remuneration, information and reporting rights, escalation and dispute-resolution procedures, and the preparation and education of the next generation.

Family governance documents cannot replace trust, shared values or personal relationships. They provide an agreed process for situations in which responsibilities, interests and expectations may differ.

Philanthropy and Family Identity

We help families incorporate philanthropy into their long-term vision and wider legacy.

Working with specialist advisers where required, we may coordinate the development of a philanthropic strategy and governance model, define roles for family members and future generations, establish criteria for selecting causes, partners and initiatives, implement approval, monitoring and reporting procedures, and create frameworks for evaluating outcomes and impact.

Particular attention is given to transparent decision-making, conflicts of interest, partner due diligence, regulatory obligations and reputational risk.

What the Family Receives

  1. A consolidated map of ownership, control and responsibility
  2. Agreed arrangements for decision-making and the transfer of authority
  3. A clear view of significant vulnerabilities and implementation priorities
  4. A secure information framework for authorised family members and advisers
  5. Documented preparation for death, incapacity and other significant events
  6. A practical process for reviewing the architecture as circumstances evolve

Catamaran Family Office helps preserve the integrity of family wealth, maintain continuity of decision-making and support responsible control across generations.

We can design the framework from the ground up, independently review an established family office, strengthen a particular function or coordinate a defined project involving succession, restructuring, a change in residence, a significant transaction or another major event.

Where the family already has an established professional team, we do not duplicate its responsibilities. We identify gaps between the legal, tax, investment, operational and family-governance workstreams, reconcile advisers’ positions and provide the principal and authorised family members with a coherent view of the family’s overall wealth architecture.

Catamaran Family Office provides strategic coordination and family-office services. Legal, tax, investment and other regulated advice is provided by appropriately authorised and qualified professionals in the relevant jurisdictions.
